Save big on a Harley Softail Standard!
Not surprised nobody bought it, its hideous. And if you dropped it and fell on you in an out of the way pkace you'd probably die there. What made Honda engineers thought bikers needed this monstrosity is a mystery.
Here in the UK, during the Compulsory Basic Training stage of learning to ride, many instructors do not allow pupils near the front brake of a: 125cc bike. Yet after passing the CBT, pupils are free to ride on public roads for two-years immediately.
I was out riding the bike today and thinking I don’t really understand counter steering, but push steering is. So much clearer. Thank you
Jerry, I could not agree more with your comments and excellent video. My concerns are: 1. Can a rider cover the rear brake pedal comfortably without actually applying light pressure on the pedal and overheating the rear brakes. 2. Covering the front brake lever is easier, again I’m not sure how comfortable a rider will be maintaining this position for an extended period, ie: freeway. I will try this and see how it works for me. Thank You for your video.
Since the front brake has 90-95% of the braking force, not covering the rear brake if it's uncomfortable, is no big deal.
I do practice this and agree. Thanks for your efforts.
Great honest technique that has kept me from more than one wreck , Thanks for what you do 👍😎
What's ur helmet camera/ mic setup ? My Sena 10C is spotty at best. Video quality is awesome but my mic can pick up too much background noise, ie, wind.
A GoPro 7 with mic adapter and a Purplepanda mic.
My wife has a big ol' butt and I find I have to plan a little bit earlier for quick stops and tricky maneuvers. I would love to see how a passenger effects the stopping distance. As @kirk32216 mentioned in his comment, I'm a retired driver and I use the Smith Driver System, so it's not often I get surprised, but it happens to us all at some point. I love your videos, thank you.
You can do that easily. Mark out a stop distance with just you, then add your wife on the back and do the same stop at the same speed.
Remember when Harley started they wanted to make it where everyone can afford one and now they are the highest bikes
First, I never heard Harley say they want to make bikes everyone can afford. 2nd, H.D. prices are right in line with all heavyweight motorcycles. Indians, 23-34K, Goldwing, 36-33K, BMW, 23-38K. In short, you have no idea what you're talking about.
I can assure you that a convertible sports car is NOT the same. We tried that after my husband hurt his back. Now we are 3 wheels all the way.
You are correct. A convertible sports car is much more fun to drive than a trike.
2014 Valkyrie. 106 hp is at the rear wheel. It's more like 118- 120hp at the crank
What's your source?
this is painful to watch
YOU are truly a life saver. Thank you Jerry.
My friend turned me on to your videos 3 years ago after I bought an Electra Glide. I was about to sell it as I could not ride it. After a few weeks of practice I felt very comfortable. I still practice almost every time I get on the bike. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You literally saved my life.
With all that engine weight down so low that bike can almost stand upright without the side stand.
ACAB
I have been researching this bike for about a year and plan on purchasing it. There are plenty of aftermarket products and parts for this and I already have an extensive list and sites to purchase from. The fact this bike has been around for over ten years shows that people do buy them and they have built a large 'Vaquero' community. Japanese bikes simply work flawlessly and with simple maintenance will never let you down. My last bike was a 2005 Honda VTX 1800n and it just ran, absolutely bulletproof. Harley definitely has the marketing and the name but it also has the initial price tag along with equally overpriced maintenance that follows you around for the life of ownership, not for me. My friends and I all ride and none of us has ever purchased a Harley and we are all in our late 50s and early 60s. We have all ridden every Harley under the sun (Demo Rides) and non of us could ever justify the costs and headaches of owning one, sorry but there it is. Lastly, Bikes are a very personal thing and if a Harley, Indian or whatever bike strikes your fancy, go with it! A Bike is first and foremost a toy for big boys so whatever you ride enjoy yourself and be safe!
why buy a big bike if u cant lean it?
Great advice buddy thanks for sharing
Excuse me, NOBODY! NOBODY! 😄😂 JK
Exactly, those are actually test questions when your taking the Riders Edge Course also! Great 3 day class!
I learned this technique a long time ago (we're literally talking the 70's) and still do it to this day. Thanks for the heads up though Jerry.
Great information! Thanks!
Thank you
Make sure the front brake is adjusted downward. If it's straight out you'll hit the throttle when you suddenly grab the brake. Don't ask how I know
😅v 😮
😅
Old former racer, and lifelong bagger guy here. Get trained. It separates the men from the boys, as it were (smarter is always better) and WILL save your bacon. Not to mention, it’s always a ton of fun.🤘🏻🫡 (plus you just might get a discount on your insurance)
Good to know, new rider here, I generally cover the rear brake just in case, I guess because I feel it’s safer for me given my limited riding experience. Been on the highway once for 3 exits, it was very nice! I mostly ride local in the streets and seeing that it’s Brooklyn, there’s always traffic, red lights and stop signs. It sucks. Can’t wait to find a nice, lazy, scenic, quiet country road. None around here by me.
Go west, young man! As in Westchester county. Some great riding in that area.
I always get looks and questions when I’m riding my Ultra Classic. Nobody has ever seen someone “Hanging off” a bagger before I guess! 😂 Truth told, I’m a former racer, and my Ultra is outfitted with high end “Race suspension”, so this style comes naturally to me. Cool trick I’ve learned, When going into the corner, turn your inside foot about 90 degrees outward on the board. This acts like a knee, so when the bottom of the toe of your boot starts to drag, you’ll know you have a couple inches before you start dragging floor board. 🤘🏻
MR Jerry you should get an award for always giving the most priceless info. You are the only motorcycle site I subscribed to because you are the only one I trust.
I cover my brakes all the time except in no traffic areas
I've always done that and when I'm urban/suburban I cover the horn! Having my finger over the horn has saved me dozens of times more than my brakes.
This is especially true for my Harley. Which are basically pigs, big attractive pigs but the handling characteristics...peuk!
I do think its incumbent of these instructors to protect the folks from themselves. I had to take a course because I got popped riding without an M license, I'd been riding for years, grew up with dirt bikes and such, so the course was entirely to easy, I was approached about possibly teaching to course, but I couldn't do it. There were folks at the course get these certification cards that absolve you from having to take the motorcycle test at the DMV which is much more strict. At the DMV you mess up and they'll deny you. At these courses, everyone passes, even if they're completely incompetent. One lady looked like she should go back and practice bicycles again before getting on a motorcycle, yet she passed. Her figure 8 was horrid, she was 10' outside the box, yet passed because technically she only went out of the lines once. By that logic you could drive a straight line through the course and say hey I only misses the lines once. This same lady had the lowest speed going into the hard stop and still had the longest stop. Them giving her the certificate is endangering to the public and herself. If she would have taken the test the actual DMV give, she's have be asked to leave after the first or second obstacle. Also different weight bike should have licensing requirements. You have to have license credentials to drive bigger vehicles, like commercial utility trucks, why shouldn't you have to prove that you can handle the bike before we let someone missile themselves and a thousand lb. bike into someone else?
Excellent advice...I took and advanced course a few years ago by a police instructor and that was the FIRST skill he taught us. Have done it ever since.
Excellent advice, and maybe practice emergency braking.
Great information thanks
♠️FEAR MONGERING MIGHT BE THE ONLY WAY SOME OF US LEARN.. just like mom saying “wait till your daddy gets home”. Great video as always .
I like to stay about 500lb for a cruiser. About 4 on a sport bike. And Jerry has got that silky smooth cigarette voice. He could teach motorcycles or read books for Audible
Thank you for sharing a simple tip that will make a huge difference in traffic.
You're welcome!
If you want a v twin get a Ducati, better looking, better handling and a lot faster.
Could have covered this in 2 minutes. That is why l skip to the end.
Want your money back?
Just knowing that every other driver/rider on the road is out to kill me, meant I've ALWAYS had my brakes covered. I've lost friends who were faster and less cautious than myself.
thanks jerry verry good tip manny thanks grts from belgium from danny
Covering the breaks, will it not shorten the brakes life? Please help in replying. Thank you so much
covering the brakes means keeping your hand over the brake. You are not appling the brakes until needed.
6:40 just got hit with nostalgia
I like your evidential approach to the information presented in the videi
Thank you, Jerry. I learned a lot from your videos and course!
Very welcome
Rear tire change and brake pads at local HD shop $750. A local guy. Veteran motorcycle drag racer. Specialized in Harley Davidson motorcycles. Beautiful shop. Same service under $400. Same tire, same pads.
Can't remember who taught me this many years ago but it defiantly is something we should all be doing. Especially if you think anything could go wrong.
